Cottesloe Beach is a 1.5 km stretch of west-facing sand and bluffs extending north from Mudurup Rocks to the southern rocks of Swanbourne Beach. A 100m long groyne has been built out across Mudurup Rocks and the beach is backed by Marine Parade.
The district was named Cottesloe on 21st September 1886 by Sir Frederick Napier Broome (Western Australia’s governor from 1883 to 1890). The name Cottesloe was chosen in honour of the brother of Captain C.H. Fremantle who became Baron Cottesloe in 1874.
There are so many things that are quintessentially Cottesloe that local, national and international visitors love to share. In January 2019 the Guardian Australia announced their poll results for the best beach in Australia and named Cottesloe as number one on the list!
